RECOPESCA

un programme à long terme mené par IFREMER

ifremer transp

Face to the lack of data to assess precisely the spatial distribution of catches and fishing effort and for the environmental characterization of the fishing area, Ifremer has been implemented since 2005 a new project, Recopesca. It consists in fitting out a
sample of voluntary fishing vessels with sensors recording data on fishing effort (and at mid-terms catches) and physical parameters such as temperature or salinity. Recopesca aims at setting up a network of sensors, for scientific purposes, to collect data allowing improving resources assessment and diagnostics on fisheries, and environmental data required for ecosystem-based management initiatives. The challenge was to develop sensors with no trouble for the fishermen, tough enough to be fixed up on fishing gears, self powered and autonomous. Insofar as the sample of targeted vessels intends to be representative of all the metiers and fleets, the sensors are modular and scalable to collect new data.
Different sensors have been implemented: (i) a temperature-salinity sensor, able to record physical parameters, depth and duration of immersion, for passive and active gears, and (ii) a specific sensor to record number or length of passive gears. A GPS monitors the position of the vessels. Each sensor is equipped with a radio device transferring the data to a receiver on-board, called “concentrator” that sends the data to Ifremer central databases by GPRS. An anti-rolling weigh-scale is currently on development to record catches per species and fishing operation. The presentation will show the first data and results of this participative approach.

The missions of Anses, set by ordinance n°2010-18 from january 7 2010, cover the risk assessment in the scope of food, environment and work, to enlighten the public authorities about their health policy. ANSES is a public agency under the supervision of the Ministry in charge of Health, Agriculture, Environment, Labor and Consumer Affairs.

Oceanic Développement has been implementing an program of observation at sea – OBSMER – for the Directorate of Fisheries since 2010. A team of 20 observers executed a scientific catches sampling on the coastal fishing between Dunkerque and  La Cotinière and on board of trawlers and offshore longliners fishing in the Celtic Sea, Northern Irzeland and West Scotland. The sampling plan incluedes more than 2 000 days of observation at sea per year.

Euronor takes an active part in this program by boarding all year observers  aboard his 4 fresh fishing trawlers. According to the years, the rate of fishing trips observed  varies between 10 and 15%.

The action “Biological sampling of catches” has for object to make samples in size of professional fishing vessels in the main landing points in metropolitan France, according to the national program endorsed by the services of the European Commission and in the more general part of the dedicated and named action of sales observation OBSVENTE. The goal is to produce structures in size of landings of main commercial species for the stock assessment puposes by the Regional Organizations of Fisheries Management – ORGP – and other relevant international scientific bodies, like the CIEM,  in accordance with the international obligations of the Community and its Member States (settlement CE N°199/2008, article 20).

Euronor regulary welcomes Océanic Développement’s team of technicians during the fish delivery to make series of measurements on predefined samples.
