Alternately, during each fishing operation, one boat takes the lead and the other becomes the slave. The captain of the lead boat decides where to set the trawl and when to haul it in. The maneuvers involved in transferring the trawl from one vessel to the other are more complex than with a single trawl, but the technique is often very effective thanks to a significantly greater drag effect. The combined average catch of the two boats serves as the basis for paying both crews.

This fishing technique is quite old. Developed from the beginning of the 18th century on the Mediterranean coasts by Spanish, Portuguese, Italian, and French fishermen, it was also practiced on the coasts of Great Britain and in the Scandinavian countries. Regularly used successfully in pelagic fisheries (which live in the water column), it was the Faroese fishermen who started using it for demersal species (which live on the bottom) in the late 1970s. We only developed this technique in our fleet in 2015 for our saithe fishery in the North Sea.

[/vc_column_text]

[/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=”1/2″]

[vc_raw_html]PGlmcmFtZSB3aWR0aD0iMTAwJSIgaGVpZ2h0PSI0MDAiIHNyYz0iaHR0cHM6Ly9za2V0Y2hmYWIuY29tL21vZGVscy8yZmIzYTc3NTZmZmU0OWZiOTY1NzZmNjFlY2NhYWZjNy9lbWJlZCIgZnJhbWVib3JkZXI9IjAiIGFsbG93dnIgYWxsb3dmdWxsc2NyZWVuIG1vemFsbG93ZnVsbHNjcmVlbj0idHJ1ZSIgd2Via2l0YWxsb3dmdWxsc2NyZWVuPSJ0cnVlIiBvbm1vdXNld2hlZWw9IiI+PC9pZnJhbWU+[/vc_raw_html]

[/vc_column][vc_column width=”1/2″]

[vc_column_text]Single trawl fishing.
